Labyrinth
I watched Labyrinth tonight, hee, nostalgia trip. I loved it when I was in junior high and I remember at least one rewatch in late highschool in tribute to David Bowie's tight pants.

I realized Jim Henson was involved, but I didn't remember/know he directed it.

Female fantasy adventure heroine FTW (even though all her friends, and most of the other characters, are male).

Gee when I was 13 she seemed totally justified at the beginning and not whiny or selfish at all. Also in 23 years what the movie calls 15 feels a lot more like 12 to me.

GlamrockGoblin!DavidBowie forever. Although his wig got a little rough looking in places.

They keep calling Hoggle Hogwart.

Denis's favorite part is when she figures out (thanks to the worm) how to get into the labyrinth proper by the very complicated trick of shifting perspective to see depth.

I really like the door guards with the truth/lying riddle.

Also the oubliette, although now the hands seem as creepy as they are cool. Also, who picks down? (Alice in Wonderland I know, but still.)

I didn't remember that the big orange guy had the power to make the rocks move.

I love the little foxy guy on the dog! He has a definite Miss Piggy vibe going on. I wonder if that's who Frank Oz did.

When she eats the peach and goes into the masked ball I really want her big 80s hair with all the stuff in it. Also like how her dream is to dance with GlamrockGoblin!DavidBowie. He's dangerous, but sexy, I love him, I hate him. He could almost be a vampire. (The goblin king never really turned into a trend the same way vampires did.)

I remembered the Escher stuff, but looks like the artistic director may have studied some 17th c. Dutch and Flemish genre painting too (Bruegel? Jan Steen?).

It's still *so* *tragic* I didn't grow up to be Jennifer Connelly, even after dressing like her character in highschool

movie still

me in highschool (that blouse was all cotton and those sleeves were a bitch to iron, but I loved it).

eta: the "making of Labyrinth" DVD extra is really really cool. Lots of interview with newwavehair!DavidBowie and behind the scenes with the puppets and puppeteers. Also not just Jim Henson and David Bowie, Jim Henson + David Bowie + George Lucas FTW.

Such a great movie, I should really get it on DVD (I still have my original VHS from the 80s).

The goblin king never really turned into a trend the same way vampires did

Like half the girls I know would disagree. ^_^ I still see him on t-shirts with some regularity.

oh David Bowie's goblin king did, but the "sexy goblin" idea didn't. We're not seeing 2009 goblin king movies like we keep seeing vampire remakes.

Fair enough. Archetypally speaking, he's more of a classic faerie than anything, but we actually don't see a lot of those in movies, either, for some reason.

This is my favorite movie EVER! Has been my whole life. I can remember when I was little and we would rent movies, I would pick this movie every single time.

I, too, wanted to be Jennifer Connelly. I loved that her character's name was Sarah and I wanted to have a sheepdog named Merlin.

And Goblin Bowie = hot stuff!
